BIRT Training

BIRT User Group UK

The first meeting of the BIRT user group, held at London’s Planet Hollywood on the 28th January 2010 was a resounding success.

With nearly 30 members coming along to see Mica Blocks excellent presentation of Actuate 10 and pre-release overview of Actuate 11 many users gained a deeper understanding of what BIRT and it’s commercial enhancements from Actuate could do for their business and reporting requirements.

The group was lively and interactive, helped along by the all inclusive wine, beer and excellent Planet Hollywood style buffet.

We also learned a lot about organising these events from the feedback we have received from participants and hope to use this to make future events even more successful.

The BIRT User Group (UK) is an independent body for users of BIRT Open Source and Commercial reporting software from Actuate and the Eclipse Foundation. Our aim is to share information, ideas and experiences of BIRT usage in regular meetings, via our web site, forums and news letters.

Meetings are initially going to be held in the evenings in central London at interesting and unique venues and we hope to feature some great presentations, useful tips and tricks, a bite to eat and maybe even some exciting freebies!

The UK BIRT User Group attracted James Governor to present at its second meeting at One Aldwych, London on April 27th 2010.

James is co-founder of RedMonk, the Open Source analyst company that was recently named Top Open Source Thought Leaders by LinuxWorld. A prolific analyst, blogger and market contributor on Open Source issues, James has more than 7000 followers on Twitter under the name Monkchips and he is ranked in the top five analysts worldwide by the Institute of Analyst Relations. James brings an energetic, fresh, out of the box way of thinking and his passion for sustainability issues lead to the creation of GreenMonk, a range of advisory services to help organisations better understand how sustainability issues will affect them.

James's 2-part presentation 'Keep up or fall behind' centred on how to leverage Web 2.0 and Social Media technologies into applications and how Open Source technologies can help keep up with innovation in these areas. The talk initially focused on data visualisations and how they are becoming more compelling and meaningful, how delivery mechanisms are changing and how interactivity is key for understanding. It then expanded to take a look at incorporating Social Media tools into Web applications built with BIRT.

The packed user group meeting agenda also featured a presentation from BIRT Evangelist, Virgil Dodson. Virgil's talk, which will be peppered with live examples, focused on Eclipse BIRT and covered a range of topics like Using the BIRT Designer, Re-using BIRT assets and giving BIRT some style. Virgil also treated attendees to a look at the BIRT iPhone app on the iPad.

Attendees to the April 27th meeting were entered into a free draw for a chance to win a copy of BIRT for Beginners, authored by Paul Bappoo, co-founder of the UK BIRT User Group. BIRT for Beginners is a quick start guide for installing and evaluating Eclipse BIRT (open source) and Actuate's value-added BIRT product line (commercial).  Paul Bappoo was be on hand to discuss his experiences with BIRT and gather attendee experiences too.
